Dr. Likens’ success in treating veterans results from his integrated approach to health care and a unique skillset that he has gained through extensive postgraduate work in advanced chiropractic techniques; chiropractic biophysics; multiple certifications in acupuncture, dry needling, applied kinesiology, clinical nutrition, and functional medicine; spinal and brain traumatology; and the evaluation, treatment, and rating of permanent impairments. Dr. Likens creates a care plan tailored to each individual patient using multiple therapies that work together for the best possible outcome.

Neck Pain

Chiropractic Treatment

Dr. Likens provides chiropractic adjustment (or spinal manipulation) to treat back, neck, and joint pain; headaches/migraines, muscle tightness or imbalance, and posture problems. Chiropractic treatment enhances the body’s natural healing ability and results in less pain, easier movement, reduced anxiety, and better well-being overall. Chiropractic adjustment typically feels like a quick, gentle stretch or pressure on a specific joint in your spine. For most people, it’s not painful and may even feel relieving.

Complementary Treatments

Acupuncture (traditional, electric, and battlefield acupuncture)

Acupuncture is a relaxing wellness practice that helps your body feel better and more balanced. Traditional acupuncture is an ancient practice that has proven successful for treating pain, anxiety (including PTSD), insomnia, and many other conditions. It works by gently stimulating specific points on your body, usually with hair-thin needles that are so small, many people barely feel them — or not at all. Most people find the experience calming, and some even fall asleep during a session!

Electric acupuncture is a modern version of traditional acupuncture. This method involves using a very low, controlled electrical current between some of the needles. Most people describe the sensation as a soft tapping or buzzing. It can even feel soothing. Electric acupuncture results in a deeper response from your body’s healing response.

Battlefield acupuncture, or BFA, is particularly helpful for immediate pain relief. In this type of acupuncture, tiny needles are inserted at key points around the ear. The needles are left in to extend the time of pain relief. They fall out over the course of several days. BFA was developed by an Air Force physician for use in the field but the method has been demonstrated within VA to be highly effective for chronic pain relief and PTSD.

All types of acupuncture work as a “reset” for your body’s inner balance — gentle, soothing, and focused on helping you feel your best.

Dry Needling

Dry needling is a treatment that uses very thin, solid needles — similar to acupuncture needles — to target tight muscles or “trigger points” that are causing pain or restricting movement. The needle is inserted directly into a tight muscle knot or tender area. It relaxes the muscle, improves blood flow, and reduces pain and stiffness. Many people feel a twitch in the muscle when the needle hits the trigger point, followed by a deep sense of relief or looseness.

Massage Therapy

Massage therapy is a hands-on treatment that involves manipulating the muscles, tendons, and soft tissues of the body to treat pain, musculoskeletal conditions (such as arthritis), anxiety and PTSD, and insomnia.

Neuromuscular Reeducation

Neuromuscular reeducation involves therapeutic techniques aimed at retraining the communication between the nervous system and muscles. This treatment helps those recovering from stroke, spinal cord injury, and traumatic brain injury to improve balance and coordination, posture and body alignment, gait, and functional movement.

Myofascial Release

Myofascial release is a gentle, hands-on therapy that relieves tension in the fascia — the thin, stretchy connective tissue that surrounds your muscles, bones, nerves, and organs. When fascia becomes tight or restricted (due to injury, stress, inflammation, or trauma), it can cause pain, limited movement, or stiffness. Myofascial release helps restore normal movement and comfort by releasing those restrictions. It’s used to help with chronic pain, headaches, jaw tension, and restricted mobility.

Therapeutic Exercise

Therapeutic exercise consists of physical movements, postures, or activities designed to help people restore function, improve mobility, reduce pain, and enhance overall physical fitness, especially after injury, illness, or surgery. It’s used widely in physical therapy and rehabilitation to help people regain strength, balance, flexibility, and endurance for everyday life.

Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT)

natural healing process, boosting blood flow, breaking up scar tissue or calcium deposits, and reducing pain. During ESWT, a handheld device is placed on the skin over the painful area, and pulses of energy (like small shock waves) are delivered through the skin to the tissue underneath. Most people feel a tapping or pulsing sensation, and the intensity can be adjusted if you feel any discomfort.

Spinal Decompression

Spinal decompression creates more space between the bones of your spine to help reduce pain, nerve pressure, and disc compression, usually for conditions like herniated discs, sciatica, or spinal stenosis. This therapy is performed on a special motorized table that gently stretches the spine to take pressure off spinal discs and nerves.

Additional pain modalities, such as electric stimulation, heat therapy, and cryotherapy, are used to complement and enhance treatment.
